Owned and operated by the Shaunessy and Oldfield families since 1993, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards sources its grapes solely from its two distinct vineyards, one on the Black Sage Bench and one on the Golden Mile Bench, which comprise a total of 150 acres. The winery offers wines in two tiers under the Tinhorn Creek label. The Varietal Series includes a Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Inniskillin is one of a few Canadian wineries that has facilities both in the Okanagan and Niagara regions. The winery started in Niagara in the '70s—garnering the first Canadian wine license since prohibition ended—and has been making wine in the Okanagan at its Golden Mile location since 1994. The Victoria Wine Society is doing something a little different with its last tasting event of the group's fiscal year. They will be tasting an extensive flight of premium sakés from Japan. The tasting takes place at Ambrosia Event Centre, 638 Fisgard St. at 7pm on Monday, January 30. Guest speakers include Barbara Mills and award-winning drinks writer Adem Tepedelen.

"Canadian wine with a Portuguese twist" is how Quinta Ferreira describes itself on its website. Owners John and Maria Ferreira, who were both born in Portugal, immigrated to Canada at a young age. The couple purchased their Okanagan estate—which was an orchard—in 1979. They eventually decided to convert to grapes and the first vines were planted in 1999. Nearly a decade into production, Quinta Ferreira is making some truly unique Okanagan wines. Stop in this Saturday, November 19, from 2 to 4 pm to sample these five offerings.

Saturna Island Family Estate Winery has one of the more picturesque settings of nearly any winery in BC. Located on—of course—Saturna Island, the winery sits tucked below Mount Warburton Pike, while the 60-acre, south-facing vineyard slopes down toward the ocean. They grow some good cool-climate grapes there, too! Though they have used Okanagan grapes in the past (as their own vines were maturing) everything they make now is estate grown. Started by Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger in the Okanagan Falls area in the mid-’90s, Stag's Hollow's philosophy is based on the idea that "if you grow quality in the vineyard, making great wine will follow."

They're renowned for their Sauvignon Blanc, which has been compared favourably to both Sancerre from France and New Zealand examples, though Gerelus and Pruegger, "like to think it is uniquely Stag’s Hollow, expressing the terroir of the Okanagan with minimal winemaking intervention."

We now have tickets for the latest Victoria Wine Society tasting—2008 Bordeaux releases—to be held at the Ambrosia Event Centre (638 Fisgard St), Monday, Oct. 24 at 7 pm. As with last year's event, the VWS has decided to double the average price of the wines to be tasted and limit the selection to 10 wines.

Poplar Grove started in the Naramata Bench area in 1993 with a modestly sized operation with big aspirations. It quickly established an excellent reputation, but it's only been since Tony Holler (of the Holler grape-growing
family) became the majority investor in 2007 and brought with him 110 acres of prime Southern Okanagan vineyards, that Poplar Grove has been able to fully realize those original lofty aspirations. The folks behind the View Winery started growing grapes in the mid-'90s on land that had been farmed by their families for five generations. Their first vintage in 2007 produced 500 cases of Gewurztraminer and Pinotage, but they are currently bottling close to 1500 cases of several different varietals and blends. Tickets Available for June 13 Victoria Wine Society Tasting: Rieslings For Summer

We will be hosting the next Victoria Wine Society event here at the store on Monday, June 13, at 7pm. It will be a reception-style tasting and the theme is Riesling, both import and domestic. Twenty wines will be poured blind.

Cost is $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers. To register for the tasting, payment must be received in advance to reserve a space, and there will be no exceptions, as availability is limited. Product Spotlight: Ruby Tuesday (aka Ruby Blues)

Originally named after a famous Rolling Stones song, this new winery has recently changed its name to Ruby Blues as a result of a lawsuit filed by an American restaurant chain. The more compelling story, however, is the fact that it was started by the former owners of Red Rooster winery, Beat and Prudence Mahrer, who sold RR to Andres (now Peller Estates) in 2005. The Mahrers are back in the game with some new Okanagan wines and we're fortunate to have three of them in stock.

Morning Bay is one of a handful of wineries based in the Gulf Islands (as profiled in the recently published Wine Islands of British Columbia book). Based on Pender Island, they have 10 acres under vine which they use to make their light and refreshing Bianco and Chiaretto blends. The rest of their lineup uses grapes sourced from the Okanagan. An interesting note about Sperling Vineyards: Even though this winery has only been in operation since 2008, many acres of grape vines in the vineyard are 45 years old. So, when they say "old vines" on their Foch and Riesling, they aren't exaggerating. Saturday Free Wine Tasting, March 12, 2-4 pm: Red Meritage Blends

The name "Meritage" can be a bit confusing to some people. It's basically a trademarked marketing term developed in the Napa Valley, so that winemakers could make a "Bordeaux-style" blend and then give it a fancy French-sounding name. It's not even actually a French word; it's a creation of the Meritage Alliance and any winery that wants to put it on their label has to become a "member" (that is, pay a fee).

So, that's a long-winded way of saying that our wine tasting will be five red wines all made with the same grapes allowed in French Bordeaux: cab sauv, merlot, cab franc, petit verdot and malbec. Join us for some BIG wines, this Saturday, March 12, from 2 to 4 pm.

Saturday Free Wine Tasting, March 5, 2-4 pm: River's Bend

Though the grape vines in River's Bend's 15-acre vineyard were planted in 1992, this family-owned Surrey winery only opened its doors in 2005. Saturday Free Wine Tasting, Feb. 26, 2-4 pm: Nk'Mip Cellars

Most famously known as "North America's first Aboriginal owned and operated winery," Nk'Mip Cellars (pronounced in-ka-meep) has been an important part of the growth of the Okanagan wine region. The Osoyoos Band has vineyards on its land that were planted more than 40 years ago and they continue to expand their acreage under vine, supplying many other wineries with grapes. Forty acres near the town of Osoyoos are specifically micro-managed for Nk'Mip Cellars. Stop in this Saturday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 pm to taste three of their offerings.
